Richard Shiffrin Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

Distinguished and Luther Dana Waterman Professor Richard M. Shiffrin Wins the Society for Mathematical Psychology Senior Fellow Award (2023).

MATHPSYCH.ORG — Distinguished Professor Richard M. Shiffrin, PhD, was named winner of the prestigious Society for Mathematical Psychology Senior Fellow Award (2023) on July 20, 2023, for his lifetime contributions to the field of mathematical psychology. Professor Shiffrin won the prize for his contributions in the mathematical modeling of psychological phenomena, the mentorship of students, faculty, and others, with a particular focus on advancing the field of mathematical psychology, and for his service that has advanced the field of mathematical psychology.

Professor Richard M. Shiffrin

The prior year’s Senior Fellow Award winner, Distinguished Professor Jerome Busemeyer, PhD, summarized Professor Shiffrin’s contributions by stating, “Throughout his distinguished and remarkable career, Shiffrin's contributions to formal and systematic theory in the psychological and cognitive sciences have represented the very best in these fields. His research has embodied combined efforts into formal modeling of cognitive and perceptual processes and ingenious experimental investigations into deciding among alternative conceptual and formal views of these processes. For decades, his work has helped shape the entire direction of the field.”

Professor Shiffrin earned his PhD from Stanford University in 1968 after which he joined the faculty at Indiana University, Bloomington where he continues to serve. His extensive research record includes multiple papers that have become focal points for their subfields. In addition to his extensive contributions to the Society for Mathematical Psychology, including serving as its Chairman and on the editorial board of its journals, his service contributions include serving as Chair of the Governing Board of the Psychonomic Society, Editor for multiple top psychology journals, and regularly organizing symposia and special issues focused on key topics in the field. Additionally, many of his former students and postdoctoral advisees have gone on to make significant contributions in psychological science. For his prolific impact Professor Shiffrin was named a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (1995), a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1996), a Fellow of the American Psychological Society (1996), and a Fellow of the American Philosophical Society in 2005. He was awarded the prestigious David E. Rumelhart Prize Contributions to the Theoretical Foundations of Human Cognition in 2002.
